My neighbor saw it. I saw the phone line draped across the street by the mailboxes but didn't know what it was at first. Supposedly I'll have the phone working again by the end of the day tomorrow, and thus internet access from home again.

Meanwhile I've updated my Netflix queue from the office. I'm going to watch "Columbo" in order! How novel. Maybe later I'll tell you about my fantasy vision of the future involving "Singin' in the Rain" from back when I was 15 or so.

okay...

It was a weekend when my parents and my brother were out of town so he could check out colleges, and the first time I'd ever had the house to myself for an overnight. I got to stay in his room, which was cool cuz he had a TV, and I could watch TV in bed. At some point "Singin' in the Rain" came on. I was having such a grand time, house to myself, watching this musical (the Donald O'Connor parts were my favorites), and I got to thinking about how cool it would be to have a copy of the film I could watch any time I wanted. I don't think I'd heard about personal-use videotape yet, but it was Coming Soon to a Culture Near Me. At the time, though, it seemed like something only rich people would be able to do. Or people in the entertainment industry.

Once the home-use videotape revolution arrived, I realized I still liked it better when something would come on TV. There was something about other people being out there watching it, too, simultaneously. The diffuse anonymous audience of others sharing the experience, albeit in our separate homes.

And now I have Netflix. I can hardly believe I have lived to see it.

You're so gracious, E. I hardly set the scene on that one properly, I fear. The luxury of that weekend and how I set myself up for sheer indulgence, and how free & independent it all felt---I really haven't done it justice.

Well, I don't know about that. It all made sense in my head. :^)
