Postcard of the Day

(I haven't decoded it, so don't know yet what you are.)

At first I just saw -TION. Then IDIOT. Now I'm looking at the gold-bordered letters as possible first letters of words in the answer. I'm kinda close to something maybe with OUT OF SIGHT NOT OUT OF MIND, but that leaves me with the letters HOT and by the first-letters hunch two words left, one starting with T and one with O. "Out of sight, not out of mind, Oh T"?

wait maybe I have too many words starting with O and it's just .... yeah wait there are 4 gold Os... but would they use "tho" back then? "Out of sight, tho not out of mind"? Or put the "tho" at the end?

Also the card would convey that even without the message.

Hey, I just noticed the varying squiggle patterns behind the letters.

(like I'm actually talking to anybody in real time! 🤪)

yep that's it! still don't know where the "tho" goes, but wheresoever it may go, 'tworks!

OUT OF SIGHT--- NOT OUT OF MIND, THO
or
OUT OF SIGHT, THO NOT OUT OF MIND

I confess that I would have just gone to an anagram-solving website...

On the bright side--I did the real calculus on your trivia web thingy sample question.

Uh, what thingy? Is this Learned League--related?

[identity profile] peteralway.livejournal.com 2019-11-26 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes--the Learned League sample questions. Though they change them randomly, apparently. So that question isn't there anymore. But I think it was "What is the area bounded by the function Y=X^2, the line Y=0, the line X=0, and the line X=2." I only got maybe a fifth or a quarter of the questions right, but I got that one. And there were a couple that I *should* have gotten, in that when I saw the answer, I realized I knew it.

It's fun to try to remember, and more fun to figure one out, or come up with an educated guess (or just a wild-goose-chase guess) that works out. There's also a Best Wrong Answer consolation prize, though the odds against getting that are great--- it used to be called Funniest Wrong Answer, and Thorsten awards it only for some questions. Then at the end of the season the winner for the season is named.

Would you like to join Learned League next time a season opens up? I'd trust you to follow the rules (1. Don't forfeit. 2. Don't cheat.). The first season is free, and the ones after that aren't exactly pricey, if you find you're into it. Let me know, and I can invite you. No obligation. (We can invite one person, or maybe it's two?, each season, but I rarely use my invites.)

I find it amusing, but I already have more hobbies than I can keep up with! Thanks for the offer, though.
