bakin'

Just back from the International No Diet Day bake sale for NOLOSE across from the farmers' market this morning. About to head out for Kentucky Derby party.

I realized as I was making cookies last night that they were the first I baked in something like TEN YEARS. That is to say, the last time I made cookies before yesterday, at least most of the following were true:

[livejournal.com profile] upsidedownblue hadn't yet kissed a boy;
[livejournal.com profile] pijeanf still lived on the other side of the continental divide (and maybe even in CA);
[livejournal.com profile] vjsmom worked at the Archives & wouldn't have a kid for another five years;
[livejournal.com profile] homovegetarian was still working on her B.A.;
[livejournal.com profile] infinitepresent and [livejournal.com profile] elmur_fudd hadn't been through the third grade;
[livejournal.com profile] sprig5 and I hadn't even met yet.

In other words, it'd been a long time since I'd made cookies.

What else was true over ten years ago?

10 years ago:

I had no criminal record.

I was constantly at odds with my mother, her husband, and one brother.

I was a McDonalds manager.

I did not own more than 2 dresses.

I shaved my legs religiously and was on a constant search for men.

I had never heard of South Park, Harry Potter or Thelema.

Well, someone had. It's an actual place.

And I've been there.

Ten years ago:

I'd never driven a car (even to the extent that I "drive" now, which, as the number of tickets I've received will tell you, is still a rather loose usage of the word).

I hadn't yet written a single record review.

Soul Rotation by The Dead Milkmen was my favorite album. (Still a favorite, but not the favorite.) Monty Python and the Holy Grail was my favorite movie. (Again, I still love it, though it's no longer number one.)

I still ate meat.

I weighed pretty much the same as I do now.

I wasn't friends with anyone I'm currently friends with, I don't think. (Maybe my friend Jim? I can't really remember the timeline. But he's the only one who's even close.)

Umm... I think the rest is probably too depressing to contemplate. The ol' teen years weren't that kind to me.

You're not the only one of my favorite people who would be loathe to revisit teenagedom.

Ten years ago...
My ex and I were on the same team.
I was working on my "Rockets of the World" poster. I was trying to make a living off of my books alone
My first bunny pal, Frida, would not be born for 2 1/2 months.

And my entire musical life was stuffed, out-of-sight, out-of-mind, in my blue corduroy dulcimer bag.

I almost put something in my original list about you being pre-filk then. I knew the dulcimer was there but dormant.

Ten Years Ago ...

[personal profile] groovesinorbit 2005-05-08 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd been in CO for less than a year.

I had 5 cats, only one of whom I have now.

R&I owned our home, which we don't anymore.

I was unemployed, soon to be hired at the bakery.

There was 10 feet of snow on the ground that wouldn't completely melt until July. Welcome to Colorado.

Speaking as a homeowner whose circumstances changed rather unexpectedly, maybe it's not always such a bad thing to go back to renting. (Especially to have a place like yours.)

No, it's not always a bad thing. Less responsibility is always good. I'll be glad when we have our own place again, though.

Ten years ago . . .

[identity profile] vjsmom.livejournal.com 2005-05-09 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I was drinking heavily (of course that was true ten months ago).

Jeffrey was not born or even contemplated.

I was not speaking to one person that I talk to all the time now.

I hadn't met most of the people I now consider friends.

I don't think I'd kissed a woman.

Well, considering Denise left our lives circa 1993, I think you're wrong on that last one. (You did kiss her, yes? I'm pretty sure [livejournal.com profile] pijeanf did.) (She was a good kisser! Sadly, the H-bomb was even better.)

I did. Twice!

Never had the pleasure

[identity profile] vjsmom.livejournal.com 2005-05-10 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
Nope--I never did kiss Denise. You know who the first woman I kissed was; you've just forgotten--the Hippo after the sensual opera after the sensual Italian dinner. . . . then the woman opted not to take it any further even though at that point I was pretty receptive to the idea. . . . ah--rejected again (yes, that's a joke).

What are you doing up, girl? I thought you were going to bed over an hour ago.

Somehow I hadn't realized that was your first woman-kissing. That was some good kissing. It was indeed a sensual night all around, Samson et Dalila not the least of it.

And believe me, I wanted to.
