It's a regular mass-produced (if on a small scale) one, from the heyday of postcards, pre-1915. I think it's mostly likely a play on the "women going to college" thing. Cards sometimes made fun of female scholars, or referenced their type, like it's a novel thing.

Don't know when they started being called "co-eds", but it's weird that that term is usually applied to the women, since the men would be co-eds too, no?
