Postcard of the Day

Elvis Week concludes with this card of him, his father, and his grandmother.

Strange, strange, strange...

No-one in this picture looks happy. They're not even pretending to be happy. It's got an atmosphere that reminds me of Grant Wood's American Gothic. Dad is anxious, granny looms and broods, Elvis stuffs his face.

This search shows another photo taken at the same time, plus one image that's similar (father in same jacket, Elvis in a different shirt, Minnie with her hair wrapped up).

Curious about the photographer.

Me too. Cuz there was at least that one other person in the room.

Minnie is smiling in the other colour photo, but neither of the men are. Were these publicity shots? Newspaper photographs? The black and white photo must have been taken on another occasion- and is altogether jollier- with the family members interacting; it looks like a snapshot- taken by someone they were happy to have around.

Maybe it was an army photographer? He looks to be on break from his military duties, being in uniform & all.

Could be- and that might explain the all-round lack of enthusiasm. They're being used by the military- and they resent it.

Oh, Elvis. So young. So hungry.
