Old humor is weird. I mean, yeah, it's a nutty-looking thing that I could imagine was real, but it seems like a photo would get the idea across better. Ind I find it odd that the commentary has to be in verse, and "takes the cake" has to be in quotes. I also wonder if these are specific known comic characters, or just a stand-alone card.
I'm fairly confident they weren't known comic characters, and I get the comic-vs.-photo thing. But I'm with you on the rest. I like the thinker's tie, and that he's sitting on a soap box, and the old-fashioned/two-horse stoplight. Plus the coloring is better than you see on a lot of linen comic cards.
