I like me some hounds & all, and a spaniel has a way of grabbing my eye, but I think I'm a Working girl. Still, there's lotsa doagie types I like.



What kindsa doggies do you like? Have you had dogs? Whaddaya like about dogs? What are the best names for dogs you've known or heard tell of?

Let's see. I've had a beagle and a miniature schnauzer. From a 5 yr-old's perspective, they were cool pups. I love Bernese Mtn Dogs and Newfies. Irish Wolfhounds, too. Big dogs are the coolest. But if I was going to get a dog, I'd go to the pound and picked one that looked healthy and happy (and liked me, to quote R's sister A). Purebreds can be trouble. Health problems, behavior problems. Mutts are best, you're not supporting puppy mills, and you're rescuing somebody from a shelter. All good.

We had a long-haired daschund named Nutmeg when I was little - my parents had him before I was born; he was put to sleep when I was in 4th grade. He was a cutie.

When I was a kid, we had, in chronological order: a collie (who was epileptic, clinically hyperactive, and perpetually escaped the yard and ran away, but she adored all children so in order to recapture her, my parents just had to find the nearest children playing outside and ask the kids to capture her for them); a small-sized light-brown mutt (who chewed five consecutive garden hoses to bits in the space of two weeks and consequently was returned to the pound by my parents); a St. Bernard (who was not hyperactive but did want to be a lap dog, and also had an alarming habit of walking up to anyone who was standing next to the swimming pool and leaning all his weight against them all friendly-like but not aware that he was pushing us into the pool); and a golden retriever (who never retrieved a single thing in her life but had no particularly annoying habits). Now my parents have a very large part-German Shepherd mutt (who's the smartest dog I've ever met and does all manner of impressive tricks).

I don't think of dogs as companions so much as employees who work in exchange for room and board. I had a german shephard once I kept around mainly in case of zombie holocaust. A good dog can make all the difference in the event of zombies.

We had a couple of collies when I was little. Then a black lab. Then, of course, the toy poodle. She was cute and kind of sweet, but I like a dog with a little more, oh, I don't know--muscle? hardiness?

My personal favorite these days is the clumber spaniel. That one that was best-in-show at Westminster a few years back won me over, as did Roger Karras's description of a "slow, deliberate worker." I also really like beagles--they usually seem so good-natured.

You may recall that my roomie in Wmsbg had a Jack Russell. He was very energetic and fun. Unfortunately he ended up with a seizure disorder that may or may not have been due to intensive in-breeding.

Those are my thoughts on dogs. I'm not getting one any time soon.
