I've done my googling and discovered that the Maine was a US warship that blew up in mysterious circumstances in the harbour at Havana- but I really can't see what that has to do with beans....
I'm stumped too. I know the phrase "Remember the Maine" was a rallying cry, like "Remember the Alamo", we heard about in American history classes. Cubans exporting beans, maybe, or having beans in their cuisine? Doesn't seem likely. As I told zyzyly above, I'd been thinking maybe it was some play on the main[e] course.
Could I take it on a more childlike approach? Like ok, you vegetarians - beans MIGHT be more nutritious than meat, but it can really blow you up - like the Maine... as in gassy?
