I love how clearly posed the couples are.

Good point.

You remind me of observing something similar about this card, years ago, when Photobucket was still working for embedding in my LJ:

train.jpg

It was mostly posed couples:

And then there was the strange figure that didn't take much stretching to see as death:

The couple whom I suppose we're meant to read as mother and daughter seem to be leaning against the train. Not a good idea. But perhaps they've been posing a long time.

That's a very long coat the "death" man is wearing. Is he reading a newspaper? He's hard to make sense of.

Do you think the railway company supplies those little blue to stools to help people alight or did the young couple bring theirs with them?

I like to think they couple brought the stool along with 'em, now that you ask. :)

But the real lightbulb for me from your post is that Death has come for the young girl leaning against the train. Cuz he/it knows what's about to happen!

It kind of looks like it's painted. At least, the way the stairway is makes it seem like it's a painting

Like she's collapsed against the train, and her mother is trying to hold her, but...

Wow, that really is dark.

And then the painting by the stairway would be a painting of a painting.

It reminds me of that line from "Kung Fu Panda" where he says "I've seen paintings of that painting"
