When I discovered stereoscopy as a teen, I learned all about doing stereo viewing without a stereoscope.
But the first time I saw the phenomenon that these use when I was a small boy, lying in the back seat of the Volkswagen Microbus. The roof had this pattern of dots on the inside, and sometimes they would suddenly look like they were floating above or below the actual car roof. So when these things first showed up--in the 80's maybe, I was ready, and had no problem viewing them.
