. . . you'll probably find me, while I'm thinking people in the room are others who are long-dead & like that, singing the theme from "L.A. Law." Who knows why, but it's burned into my grey matter pretty good, as I find myself humming or whistling it to myself, or just hearing it in my head, shockingly often. Eight or ten times a year, easy.

Where does it come from? What prompts it? I'm reasonably certain it isn't playing regularly in supermarket Muzak loops. Is there a strain that reminds me of it, scooting my mental needle over into that groove (or whatever the laser equivalent for CDs would be)?

I don't even particularly like the song. I guess I did watch the show somewhat faithfully, at least during that little spell with the (still rare at the time) lesbian subplot & kiss action.

Still.

I have a song like that too

I do that with that clown/circus song. I don't have any idea what the name of that song is, and I have no idea how else to describe it. But I inextricably start humming it our whistling it or whatever quite often.

Interestingly, a friend of mine recently started humming it and then said, "How did I get that song in my head? That happens a lot." My response was disbelief, and I told him that it happened to me too...

You are not alone, fflo. :)

Hey, maybe you were unconsciously humming your haunting song & your friend picked it up?

Holly used to have a habit of starting to whistle (or hum) whenever I did---but a different song. Possibly to drown me out! I dunno---she didn't seem to know she was doing it. It was as if I'd just put out the idea of sharing one's internal soundtrack.

I meant to bet somebody I could make her whistle. Alas! ---another lost opportunity.

Mine are going to be "Be Bop a Lu La" and the theme from "Speed Racer." They're just fun and incredibly sticky. Oh and "Here Comes Terry." They don't call it a hook for nothin'!

I don't know the theme for "L.A. Law"-- never watched the show. Now _don't_ call my voicemail and sing it!

I think it's being transmitted to you via the mercury in old fillings. We are all beamed the same 12 songs, but for some undetermined reason, are immune to most of them and susceptible to 1 or 2, uniquely. Studies are unclear if it's due to our neurotransmitter makeup or if it's all experiential factors.

I, for one, will be grateful when they stop "Believe it or not, it's just me" and rotate something new into the playlist. Please, make them stop.

I love your theory. But I have no fillings! (Natural flouride in the water in NE Kansas, perhaps---or maybe just the lucky family saliva?)
