I heard Shepherds are fairly smart, and trainable. The one I knew was a sweetie, but a little scary to strangers with the barking---and H. was afraid of them. (We'd agreed not to get a dog with any watchdog tendencies.)

I like the story of the dog who played fetch with himself.
