blue jays

a couple of absolutely beautiful blue jays were just on my bird branch. the one who appeared first, in particular, had such gorgeous colors, and so many varieties of blue and purple with the black and white.

i remember when elana commented years ago, the first i'd heard of such a thing, that blue jays are hateful birds, nasty. it really struck me, not having thought of bird types and personalities in such a way. since then others have confirmed that the species is known for its "annoying" behaviors, particularly as we watch jays with other birds.

and here i see one perch and wiggle, its flesh roil a bit, and i'm awash with there is a beautiful one of god's creatures.

it may or may not be a blessing of any external source, but it's a blessing anyhow, to feel that kind of feeling, now and then.

Ever since someone told me they were so mean, they kind of look mean to me. That angled thing on their heads looks very aggressive and warlike. But you're right, they really are beautiful beautiful creatures. That color can just take your breath away.

And their attitude problems really have no bearing on humans anyway. I mean, obviously I like owls, but most little birds hate and fear owls. And for good reason, since owls prey on them!! Quite uncivilized.

I read somewhere that often many little birds, of all the various species, will band together to swarm on an owl and run them out of town. Which I like. It's like that picture you see of a big fish being overtaken by an even bigger fish that is actually just an organized group of small fish. I think that is the caption, actually: Organize.

Anyway, I love birds. I always think I'm going to become a "birder." But those folks tend to get up really early in the morning, so that part thwarts my birding ambitions. Plus the poop phobia that has taken me over these past five years or so makes me be very nervous around birds...

I like bluejays too, even though they are terrible scolds. I kind of like that trait.

One summer in my childhood, my cat had committed some transgression against a neighborhood bluejay. It was a miserable time for the cat after that, because the jays were unforgiving. They would commence screaming when the cat went outside and would take turns divebombing the creature. This lasted for some weeks.
