Vic Chesnutt's dead. Suicide.

Sara turned me on to him. I'll always owe her one for that. She said something about him reminding her of me. I had an idea where she was coming from that way.

She was talking about songs, not being suicidal.

Here's a late-breaking Christmas greeting, in under the wire:

I remember looking him up after I saw him in Sling Blade, and finding out that he was a singer. Suicide is such a bummer, but Christmas is indeed a popular day for it.

True that.

Reading a little of his exasperating experience with health care --- augh.

On a lighter note, I was just thinking of you when I came across this clip:

Man, that's a huge bummer. I liked him a lot. You could tell he was in a very unhappy place from his last album ("last" in the sense of "most recent," not in the sense of "final," because I'm sure we'll see the inevitable release of some set of unfinished demos or whatever...), but that's still very sad.

Hope you had a nice Christmas otherwise!

I hadn't heard that newest record yet. I've been a spotty fan, but just about as into him as I get with anybody, this century (which is generally not very thoroughly). I was probably one of the more pissed people in the crowd (as in angry, not drunk) at the Magic Bag a few years ago when he was opening for somebody and most people were ignoring him, loudly moving about, shouting, yakking, laughing.

He didn't seem to be reacting to that not very audiencely atmosphere. And I could hear him well enough. I was just thinking (loudly) "You idiots." So in that respect, on that occasion, he brought out the contemptuous savvier-than-thou in me.

I did click to paypal 10 bucks to his family. And maybe, like macabre bandwagon people (?), I'll download some of his work I don't have. As of a few years ago, all the local library had was that cover album.

Christmas wasn't bad. A little weird, but not bad. Hope yours was at least that good!
