Now outside, into one of the last, if not the very last, gorgeous, temperate, wonderful autumn days.

:) is that "Ford" after the guy in the Hitchhiker book?

"Sputnik" was what they called farts in the family of somebody I used to know.

Naw, Ford is the make of the pickup truck a big ol' dawg would hang it's tongue out of.

pick something you're comfortable saying, because you'll likely be saying it a lot more than you say your cats' names. (goes without saying: something you're comfortable calling out.)

what kind of dog is he? how much does he weigh? how old is he? he looks "big," but then you see the hand holding him up and you realize he's not as big as he looks. they say black dogs are harder to find homes for, so bless you for adopting a black dog. well, that's what someone from the dane rescue group told me when i adopted zed and "apologized" because he wasn't a dane. i love black dogs though..... but i admit, when we got cooper long ago, we originally envisioned a yellow girl lab, but then got a black boy because that was what was left-- but now i prefer black to yellow in lablike dogs.

oh-- i know what else i wanted to tell you-- i grew up with girl dogs only, and cooper was my first male dog. the woman we got him from claimed that the boys were just as sweet as the girls, and in her experience (with purebred labs), were less likeley to "roam." anyway, i was nervous about getting a male dog, like he'd be more unruly or something, but now i really don't think the experience is different... at least as far as the dogs i've had go. i mean, i think it'd be harder to deal with an unspayed or (esp) unneutered dog, but other than that, i think boys and girls alike can be wonderful. and i have two boys now, because with feisty birdie, i think she'd be quicker to accept friends of the opposite sex. (that seems to be the conventional wisdom if you're looking to get another dog and your first dog is bossy.)

That was on the original list right under Pace. I think it's Esperanto for peace, too.

An Esperanto name would be good.

he's not the smallest, but one of the smallest, in a litter of ten found in the woods with their mother, a mostly-lab, who was tied up to a tree. the rescue woman said the pups were in a paint bucket, but the foster mother hadn't heard that part. some of the sibs look more like newfies or great pyranees, by head shape. i also have pix of a few who were still up for adoption when i came across 'em; now the one-ear wonder is the only one yet to find a home.

he weighed 11 lbs at 8 weeks, which was a over a week ago. almost 2 weeks ago. i was also thinking he was bigger than that, not having really seen that finger in the picture. i guess his paws aren't petite, so there's that. i'm preparing for big.

he got neutered on this past friday.

somebody i asked "do you think kids'd be scared of a dog with one ear?" said kids are more scared of black dogs. but you never know. you had me laughing about your "apology" about zed. there's always something to apologize for, i guess, if you're measuring virtue (or feeling susceptible to such measure, as maybe you can tell i have been), though with Zeus you were sure taking on a tough one---if not behaviorally, life-circumstantially.

part of my hang-up about a male was---don't laugh too much---that it'd make me seem more male-identified, perhaps, to some, if i had a male dog. some kind of queer/gender anxiety there, eh? nuts. and that ain't at all nuts compared to a lot of the nonsense running through my head.

i love that pic of birdie, btw. happy dog.

p.s.

my friend valerie (on fb) recently adopted a 2 y o St Bernard, who's prob about 140 lbs. He came with the name Monty, but she has changed it to Boomer. She said that's the sound he makes when his butt hits the floor as he rolls over to expose his belly to be petted. He is really mellow and sweet, and much calmer than my dogs!

i think it's cool that he has one ear, but hate to think of how it may have happened, or was he born that way?

cooper the lab weighed 19 lbs at 9 weeks, i believe, if i remember correctly. he had a pot belly. he tends to be 75 lbs as an adult, last i heard anyway. my zed is 63 lbs.

the fuzziness of your intended does make me think newfy a little.

my intended. :) i like that very much.

i believe i saw valerie's very fetching saint bernard, if that was him in those dog park pix. adorable.

this guy (whom they're calling pumpkin) lost the ear in a collapsing ex-pen accident when he was 2 weeks old (not long after the pups went into foster). mama dog had gone nuts. one of the other pups had a bite on the nose, and there was pumpkin, and there was pumpkin's ear. he healed quickly, though. maybe like when they bob tails and clip ears intentionally in some young'ns?

"Bodhi" (which is easily more call-able than "Svaha," and maybe a better term anyway) could be represented as "Bo D." Bo Dog.

Here's the biggest one in the litter ("Bamboo"):

Bamboo

At least one other in the litter (one of the ones adopted before I saw them) had that big fluffy head thing goin' on.

Here's the girl I was initially considering ("Hyacinth"):

Hyacinth

Here's the brother who looks a lot like my guy ("Bradford"):

Here's the shy one, and another smaller one (maybe the runt) ("Sage"):

And here, one more time, is "Pumpkin":

Pumpkin

I guess all these pictures were taken a few weeks ago.

OK-- I thought I saw some brindle action on (ahem) "Pumpkin's" left legs, and now that's confirmed, as I see it on Bamboo. Not sure what that means-- guess you'd have a fun parlor game thinking of dogs that can contribute brindle markings.

That's what foster mom said! Brindle is cool.

Basically he's the best breed: mutt.
