Date: Mar. 23rd, 2009 01:41 am (UTC)it's hard to remember what the monster is and how hard it is. the other day, there was a conversation about why soandso maintained friendships with various white women in grad school if the friendships were terribly contentious and damaging. but then there is the thought that that's as good as it's going to get and so you just take that, or you learn to live with it. (i never did.)
i think it's true what homoveg has said to me, that we got ourselves into the "mess"--that it has come to the few who are all of a same kind, and now we can't help each other to learn how to tolerate the vast majorities. if we can now learn that this won't kill us either, that's gonna be nice. i'm trying to remember that this might turn out to be true.
one reason for this is that i talked yesterday to the emanation of our collective nightmares, a male blowhard with a mickey mouse phd in philosophy, who told me i was "very introspective" :) i would have laughed out loud but had to keep it to myself so he wouldn't think he was being interesting and i could keep him from knowing any more about me.
i think those people give us the privilege of being there to see the moments confirmed we always thought happened, but we're so rarely invited to witness them.
