[livejournal.com profile] sprig5 was talking about the "sheesh" news about a sorority at DePauw, and I was commenting. The language floor was one of the best places---along with the writers' union hangouts and, say, the back & basement of Bill Smith---at my school. (There was no writers' residence space from my sophomore year until the year after I left the place, as they tore down the mecca that was Richmond House, along with its best-graffiti-ever bathroom.)

I am getting work done, in case you're wondering. Wandery mind, that's all. But firing on pretty much all cylinders when on task. I was quite schnazzy on one galley a bit ago, if I do say so m'self.

As you know, my college was "Greek-free," thank goodness. We had the Health Food Coop and the off-campus Villa full of hippies (I seem to recall your going to a party there once). I guess the men's lacrosse team had a house that was somewhat fraternity-ish in the sense that they attempted to have Amimal House--type parties, but that's about as close as we got to a fraternity or sorority.

Sinking down to the Language Floor

Every time I scroll past this post, I think that the Language Floor is some sort of bottom level of language. Is it where foul curses just can't get any lower because you just can't shock anyone with mere words, becuse you have reached the language floor? Is it where your writing and speaking drop to the level of unintelligibility--once you reach an utter inability to communicate, you have reached the language floor? Or is it that common foundation of language that we are all programmed for, and without severe brain damage, any human being can understand things at the level of the language floor?

Then I see I've missed the point entirely.

Nevermind.
