Your instincts are dead-on. His name is Chad Everett. He played a doctor, I think in Marcus Welby, MD, which had that guy who had been in Father's Knows Best and before that, you might find out years later, was in old movies, back when they weren't yet old.

I remember the name, which was frequently mentioned in ads for whatever show he was on at the time.

Wikipedia tells me it was Medical Center. That sounds right, because I think Marcus Welby was a bit before my time. I think I watched Medical Center sometimes as a kid.
