A tiny glass or plastic shell, a fraction of a millimeter in diameter, filled with w/deuterium and tritium (two forms of heavy hydrogen), which was hit by an intense laser beam, imploded to the point where the temperatures and pressures reached those of the interior of the sun, triggering nuclear fusion of the hydrogen into helium. They used to do that at KMS Fusion at State Street and I-94. Depending on who you talk to or the way the political winds were blowing, it was utopian pollution-free energy work, or support of nuclear weapons research. Realistically, I think it was both. My job was refining the methods of measuring the glass or plastic shells. Then the company imploded because the capitalist swine running the place were skimming the profits--they owned the building, and so were essentially their own landlords, charging outlandish rent to themselves, and then charging the Department of Energy for the rent as overhead. Eventually the DoE picked up its marbles and went home. All the techies wound up on the street (me) or stuck moving elsewhere for work. There was a period of months where I was paid hansdsomely not to work, though. I referred on LJ once to being paid thousands of dollars to not do fusion research. Last decent job I had.
