onstar reports that Affirmations, (Detroit suburb) Ferndale's "community center for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and their allies," has, less than a week before its opening, cancelled a photography show of femme burlesque images that had been scheduled to begin tonight. The director of Affirmations, one Michael Coleman, said the exhibit was too "focused on sexuality." Someone called Maureen Jones, whose title at Affirmations is "Social Enrichment Coordinator," said it didn't meet standards as "family-friendly."

I guess they mean "family" not like "Hey, think they're 'family'?" so much as the way Jerry Falwell means "family."

Or is he dead? Maybe I mean the way Jerry Falwell meant "family."

Can't remember the name of that jerk in Colorado who's Focus(ing) on the "Family."

None of it is "family" as in how the Sister Sledge song was adopted by gay pride rallies & parades, or by Pittsburgh Pirates fans of the late 1970s.

In the article cited above, the photographer, Kristin Kurzawa, is quoted as having said "that Jones had personally seen and OK'd the photos, which include images of full-figured women dancing or performing---some in undergarments or garters, but none showing more skin than a woman in a bikini."

onstar raises what seems to me a strong possibility when she says she suspects they were uncomfortable with seeing fat women's bodies.
